Organisation- Locations

The location of our filming was all in the woods next to the college grounds. It was therefore nearby so that when we came to film our actors didn't have to travel far and we could get the most out of our allocated filming time. The woods were a suitable filming set because we could film in different areas so that the setting looked different every time, creating the sense of travel.

Planning: Filming

On day one of filming we organised three of our actors (Dan Dawson, Hannah Cook and Jordan Cooper) to do the shots of the couple and the murderer. The filming session wasn't as successful as we hoped as the weather wasn't on our side so the actors refused to do a couple of the shots at that time. To use up the time we had, we did a couple of the shots involving our props.

Here is a screen shot of one our successful filmed clips from day one;

Day two of filming was even more unsuccessful as day one. Because of the time of the lesson being at the very end of the college day, all of our actors were not available for filming. To make use of the camera time, we again did filming of the chosen props used and we also added a new shot consisting of a scoping point of view shot. This helped increase our film length and also gave our piece a different type of shot.

These shots depict the storyline and plot in a enigmatic way which automatically participates the audience into the film. In each individual shot, we had to change time lengths and shot types such as close ups and establishing shots. We did this to create a more interesting and meaningful group of visual effects that engages the audience and reinforce the storyline.

Genre Research Summary

The openings of films for our genre, horror, mostly set the atmosphere straight away in the opening credits. They generally have a specific mood and feel aswell as have genre specific non diagetic music.

Audience research focus group

We have set up a focus group in which to achieve some feedback for our target audience. We primarily set this up to gain feedback from the outside world instead of our own points of view, this also helps us to use trial and error and create a wider array of target audiences. This focus group contained;

Alex Clark

Dan Dawson

Jasmine Mckeown

Laura Court-Jones

Audience research focus group meeting analysis

We have gathered some feedback from our focus group, and this is what they had to say.

This feedback has shown that for the genre, we need to add more violent themes and create more of an atmosphere for our movie. This will help us when we come to creating the title sequence. Some of the comments such as 'more weapons' or 'more gore' can help us create a more detailed and atmospheric environment for the audience.

Dexter- from conception to screen

Dexter, is a television series, which depicts the difference between everyday norms, and violent undertones, it also conceives the idea that everything we do is violent when the perspective is flipped. Dexter is a great example of how this works and is show. The opening credits for dexter are somewhat disturbing although only to a violent perspective, in actuality the opening scene is harmless, its only the manner in which it is portrayed that makes it disturbing.

The concept idea for the opening credits was entirely different to the finished product. The tones of the two opening credits are also completely different, this is because the non diagetic music in the background gives a more sinister atmosphere where as the whole point in the program Dexter is to create two different tones, a violent and a subtle atmosphere. With this music playing in the background the tone is immediately set to a violent one instead of two contrasting ideas.

Target Audience

The audience we wish to aim our project at is based around the ages 18-30. An audience that are emotionally capable of viewing scenes of death and gore and also enjoy the thrill of being scared. We don't want the story line to be too complicated but complex enough that it holds a serious effect. So we want our audience to be intelligent enough to follow and piece together the story. The film may attract younger audiences such as teenagers because of scenes of blood and gore, but an age guidence will be applied. Using the JICNARs scale, we're targeting our specific social class at C2. Our classification model would be classed under 'Struggler'.

Research- Key Conventions

Looking at the key conventions of the films Kick-Ass, Brick, In Search Of A Midnight Kiss, Shifty and London To Brighton, we drew together some conclusions.

What all of the films had in common is that before any of the actors appeared on screen, the sponsors of the film and the production companies of the film are all displayed.
The scene setting then takes place and this is sets the narrative for the film for example in London to Brighton as time setting is shown.

The genres of the films were established and made clear throughout the opening title sequence. The majority of the opening title sequences included the names of the actors etc. layed in text over the top of a genre setting scene. The film Brick opens in a noire style of filming showing the audience that the narrative is based back in time. Kick-Ass begins with a series of clips with a narration from the main character, this style of opening is a way of allowing the audience to get to know the character before the story of the film begins.

Main Task

The main task of the production is to create research and planning of the title sequences in films, we therefore would create a two minute maximum introduction sequence for a fiction film and then evaluate the opening scene that we have created, all the video and audio material had to be that of our own and completely original.

The deadlines for the production is:

Research Deadline : 26/11/10

Photo-storyboard deadline: 3/12/10

Filming deadline: 07/01/11

Production deadline: 28/01/11

Evaluation deadline: 11/02/11

First Idea

We have chosen to work on horror as our genre. We think that is would be easier to portray to an audience and would be more inviting than something along the lines of Romance. Visuals are a key part to horror as they attract a wide audience such as teenagers and couples, they also 'scare off' unwanted audiences such as young children, of whom it wouldn't be appropriate for. To attract our audience, the opening titles need to include both visual and aural effects that will entertain and draw them in and make them want to watch the rest of the film. I am working with Alex and we have made a genre mood board so that we can gather information to put together final ideas for our piece.

Juno Analysis

PRELIMINARY TASK- Evaluation

I learned how to put continuity editing in action so that I could create a seamless video with various shot types. I used a match on action shot, an eye line shot, a cut in, a cut out and shot/reverse shots abiding by the 180 degree rule.

To begin with we had to create a story board to follow when recording our shots. We did this by taking photos with a Digital SLR camera. This was fairly simple to do, I just put the camera on Auto format so that the task was completed fast. and when we finished taking the photos we created a simple story board on photoshop and imported the photos in order of sequence.

Our organisation wasn't the strongest. We didn't take more than one back up shots so when it came to putting the video together and there were jump cuts, we had to film the shots again on a different day. Unfortunately we didn't have one of the people we filmed so we had to use a different person, it was difficult to mask but we managed to do it. This default decreased the quality of our final video and our final piece wasn't as seamless as we would have liked.

The video cameras were easy to use for recording but when it came to uploading the recordings onto the computer it became more difficult as we hadn't done it before. What I learned about the using the video cameras is that a tripod must be used to keep a steady shot and so that if a second shot was needed no jump cuts would occur. To upload the videos onto using a fire wire. We uploaded them onto premier so that we could transfer the shots needed onto the computer and piece them together on the time line.

When all the clips needed were on the time line, we then had to rearrange them and slice them together so that it was one continuous video. When jump cuts had to be masked a clip could be cut slightly using the trimming tool. Originally, to put in our cut out we put the clip into the bar above the rest of the clips so that no sound would be heard but the sound from the unseen clip was. However because of lack of organisation, the cut out had to be filmed again and we ran out of time to place it in again properly.

PRE-PRODUCTION TASKS- Story Board

PRELIMINARY TASK- Video Production

For our preliminary task, we have to present a continuity exercise involving a character opening a door, crossing a room and sitting down in a chair opposite another character. Then the two characters have to exchange some dialogue. This task should demonstrate match on action, shot/reverse shot, the 180-degree rule, cut in and cutaway.

WELCOME

Hey there, welcome to my blog. I will be using my blog to update you on my preliminary and main task.
